The New Bianchi Oltre XR3
The Oltre XR3 is the latest addition to Bianchi’s range of high performance Countervail aero road bikes. Launched over the Easter period earlier this year we were able to take the Oltre XR3 out for a decent test ride on some pretty rough Cotswold roads and it certainly didn't disappoint - fast, highly responsive, but with levels of comfort and traction that would be pretty much impossible without the the vibration cancelling properties of Countervail. And all without deadening the all important feedback that makes for an engaging and sure-footed ride.
The XR3 is inspired by, and derived from, the XR4 which was developed in close conjunction with the pro riders of the UCI WorldTour Team Lotto NL – Jumbo. The proven (and unique) benefits of Countervail technology in eliminating vibration, reducing fatigue and enhancing handling are all carried over from the XR4. What differs is the frame shape and the carbon fibre lay-up that the Countervail material sits within. Like the XR4 this is a highly aerodynamic bike - the frame is slightly simpler in places, but retains 90% of the aero benefits and a striking family resemblance. The carbon fibres that are used build the XR3 frame are also slightly heavier than the its superlight stablemate, but they still place the XR3 in the lightweight category of aero bikes. And of course the use of the very same Countervail material as in the XR4 enable Bianchi to engineer in extreme levels of stiffness for maximum power transfer, while delivering a highly stable and forgiving ride.
The Oltre XR3 takes the proven race geometry of the XR4 and tweaks it a few millimetres here and there in order to retain exactly the same ride balance while using altered tube shapes. Your body contributes about 80% of aerodynamic drag on the bike, so staying in your most aero position as long as possible is vital for fast times. With the new Bianchi Oltre XR3, you will be able to hold your most aero position at high speed for longer to maximize your aerodynamic advantage.
Bianchi Oltre XR3 Potenza (Black/Fluo Celeste Colourway)
The Oltre XR3 is the sixth bike launched by Bianchi that features the exclusive Countervail Carbon vibration-cancelling technology. This remarkable material simply cancels vibrations that come from uneven road surfaces, which of course leads to increased comfort, but just as significantly it also increases rider control - whether over massively uneven surfaces, such as cobbles, or when the bike is under extreme pressure from cornering forces or sprint-level power.
Bianchi's objective has been to extend the availability of our Oltre aero frame platform, engineered with Countervail patented technology. The new Oltre XR3 benefits from the same revolutionary frame-design developments proven at the highest level of racing on the acclaimed Bianchi Oltre XR4. The Oltre XR3 delivers the perfect combination of control, and the competitive advantage of advanced aerodynamics.
Developed for NASA by the Materials Sciences Corporation, Countervail® is a composite-material system that combines viscoelastic carbon material within a unique fiber preform to cancel road vibrations and reduce turbulences in the frame that can affect its performance. Countervail enhances the rider’s peak power output by maximizing the vibrational dissipation in the surrounding polymers. Countervail is exclusive to Bianchi CV frames and forks for unparalleled cancellation of vibration, ensuring the frame’s optimum performance at peak power output and high speed, and eliminating road buzz to reduce rider fatigue.
The Oltre XR3 will be available in a number of standard builds, and we will also be offering the option of complete custom specification. The frame will initially be available in the 1D and 1Z colours below. There will also be a fully black option available in the early Autumn.
The global demand for the Oltre XR3 has exceeded supply this year, but as the largest Oltre stockist in the UK, we have a small buffer stock and test bikes available in the core sizes. The first four standard builds are as follows (please send us a Further Information request using the form below for latest availability, Squadra special edition and current pricing details).
In addition, we are offering our own exclusive Ultegra build for just £2999, including Mavic Ksyrium wheels! We will also have Ultegra Di2 models available as well as framesets for full custom specification.

Bianchi Oltre XR3
Bianchi collaborated with Materials Sciences Corp. to develop their innovative and exclusive application of the patented Countervail® integrated vibration cancelling system for cycling. Scientific studies prove that long term exposure to vibration, typically absorbed by the rider, causes muscle fatigue and discomfort, resulting in reduced performance - and the stiffer the bike, in terms of flex under power, the more vibration becomes an issue, affecting not only comfort but stability and control at speed.
Traditional passive damping of the frame using superficial rubber inserts and isolators are only marginally effective compared to the integrated carbon Countervail® system developed by Bianchi and proven in the extreme conditions of NASA aerospace operations. With its patented carbon fibre architecture and viscoelastic material, Countervail® carbon material is actually embedded within the carbon layup Countervail® is a patented viscoelastic carbon material with a unique fiber architecture that cancels up to 80% of vibrations while increasing the stiffness and strength of carbon frames and forks. Countervail is embedded within the layup of Bianchi CV high-performance models, immediately cancelling vibration while increasing the stiffness and strength of the entire frame.
And Countervail isn’t a small insert or dotted around the frame in patches – that’s not the way it works! It is used in every tube as it needs to be across the whole frame to maximise cancellation. It doesn’t provide cushioning or masking, with the inherent issues of deadening the ride – it cancels vibrations before they reach the rider. Countervail is expensive stuff - but it's worth every penny as it is quite simply unique in its ability to cancel vibrations and deliver control and power. Oltre XR3 riders will retain the best possible control, a significant advantage wherever and however you ride and race, with no compromise in power transfer from pedal-stroke to pedal-stroke.
Your body contributes about 80% of aerodynamic drag on the bike so staying in your most aero position as long as possible is vital for fast times.
The underlying technology used in the XR3 – Countervail®, exclusive to Bianchi CV models – cancels the vibration resulting in increased control and reduced muscle fatigue. The result with the Oltre XR3 is a smooth ride and a rider who can stay focused in their fastest, most efficient aerodynamic position for longer.
