Kinesis Racelight GF Ti

The original GF Ti was a bike that originated directly from discussions between Kinesis and ourselves – we were desperately keen to see a Titanium frame that was suited for UK specific conditions, that offered agile performance, allied to sufficient comfort to handle long hours over some of the rougher UK back-roads, but that also had clearance for mudguards without the bike becoming slow handling in order to accommodate them.

Kinesis UK understand UK conditions better than anyone, and their knowledge of metal frame construction is unrivalled – so they were in our view better positioned than anyone else to deliver the ultimate all-round road bike.  Close to a decade on and the latest version of the GF Ti is everything we envisaged and more!

Titanium is the perfect material for a genuine high-performance all-rounder – it is very lightweight, corrosion resistant, lively, comfortable and with a beautiful understated appearance.  And if, as in this case, the titanium is of the highest quality with super-high purity levels it is also incredibly strong and reliable, making it ideal for use in tough conditions or when carrying a load.  Beware cheap imitations – this is the real deal!

Of course you can ride the GF Ti all day, in all conditions – the GF bit of its name stands for Gran Fondo the Italian phrase for long distance sportives – but the GFTi offers much more.  We have seen customers take on epic touring expeditions, we’ve seen them road race very successfully, and with the disc version we have even seen them hit the dirt trails of Europe and the USA.  All without missing a beat.

Ti has the reputation of being a “bike for life”, but in this guise it is also a bike “bike for all seasons”.

GF Ti Disc

The GF Ti Disc takes the qualities and versatility of the latest version of the rim-brake GF Ti and, with the absence of brake caliper bridges, adds even more tyre clearance, together with bags of stopping power and control thanks to hydraulic disc brakes – all without compromising the ride feel, performance and handling of the bike.

The geometry has been tweaked slightly to accommodate disc brakes, while tube shapes and diameters have been adapted to manage the altered forces that are applied to the frame and forks from the relocated braking point.  But as far as ride feel goes The team at Kinesis UK have used all of their expertise in frame construction and disc brake technology to balance the changes in design so that the GF Ti’s incredible ride feel is unchanged – and aesthetically they have delivered a stunning looking bike at the same time!

The ‘bike for life’ tag may be something of a cliché when it comes to titanium but the GFTi Disc comes close to fulfilling that promise. It has the classic ride quality of a titanium machine, but with a turn of speed to ensure it’s a thoroughly engaging partner. Now it’s also future-proofed in this disc version the GFTi Disc makes a strong case for being the last bike you’ll have to buy for a while.RCUK

Kinesis UK work extremely closely with their manufacturing partners, and in developing the GF Ti Disc have incorporated a host of neat touches to make the frameset as adaptable as possible – Di2 and cable groupset compatibility, mudguard and rack bosses, band-on front derailleur mounting to enable neat installation of 1x groupsets, maximum heel clearance, QR axles for maximum wheel choice and to retain true road bike feel and performance (they found that the additional engineering and material required for through axle altered the ride quality of such a light weight and refined bike), plus laser etched down tube logos and CNC’d headt-ube graphics for a classy and resilient finish.

GF Ti (V3) Rim Brake

Not everyone wants or needs disc brake – perhaps they are looking to re-use a stock of rim brake wheels, perhaps they want to race, or perhaps they are looking to keep weight to the absolute minimum and don’t need the additional tyre clearance or braking control of hydraulic discs.

The GF Ti V3 is the third generation of the original rim-brake GF Ti – with increased tyre clearance, improved lateral stiffness for greater acceleration, and re-shaped rear stays for even greater levels of comfort.  With the latest Tracer fork the handling of the GF Ti has got even more refined too.

As with the Disc version, the GF Ti retains a 31.6mm seatpost, as it doesn’t require the extra seatpost flex that comes with narrower posts, due to the shock absorbing qualities of titanium – and the larger seat-tube offers a bigger weld surface for the stiffened bottom bracket shell and chainstays.  The bottom bracket itself is English threaded for the greatest levels of compatibility and reliability.

The Kinesis Racelight GFTi comes to us as a frameset, which can then be built up into a complete bike in our workshop using components of your choice. The GFTi is constructed from the highest quality Titanium alloy – unlike many of its Russian sourced competitors – and delivers a ride quality and reliability that can compete with the most exotic of bikes. All at a price that is simply unbeatable for a Ti frameset with this level of refinement.

Kinesis Racelight GFTi Technical Highlights

Frameset Features:

  • Constructed from AEROgrade brushed Ti3AL/2.5V.  CWSR (Cold Worked Stress Relieved) tubing – the tubing is shaped cold and then goes through a process to remove the stresses built up within the tube during forming.
  • Tapered milled head tube with matching full carbon fork and integrated tapered headset. Machined from billet and engraved with ‘Kinesis UK’ icon.
  • Integrated Mudguard and Rack mounts.
  • Fantastic tyre clearance for wide tyres, mudguards and grime – Racelight frames are built for UK conditions!
  • Includes Headset, Seat Clamp, flat mount to post mount 160mm brake adaptors (disc brake version) and all DI2/Mechanical cable guides.
  • Tough 7mm dropouts are double-eyeletted to easily accomodate rack and mudguard stays and our own brake bridge gives maximum tyre clearance.
  • Top tube is re-profiled with horizontal ovalisation, giving greater lateral stiffness when out of the saddle, complimenting the new fork and headtube.
  • Down tube is Bi-ovalised where it meets the BB and Headtube.
  • Increased BB drop for stability at speed, precision cornering and better fit.
  • Welds at highly stressed area’s like the head tube and BB are ‘double pass’, ensuring proper penetration and a decent fillet on the second pass. Seat post diamtere is 31.6mm to ensure optimal surface area for super-strong welds in high stress areas.
  • Seat stays are curved with a 2m radius, providing silky smooth comfort over long distances.
  • Chain stays are deep section and set wide at the BB for stability – Kinesis use ‘Bullet’ ends to finish them off perfectly.
  • All eyelets are welded, not riveted, so they will never come loose. There is a ‘chain keeper’ on the RHS seat stay to neatly hold the chain when the wheel is out.
  • All stops, including down tube adjusters are slotted, making cable servicing much easier, adjusters are high quality anodised alloy.
  • Hand brushed finish with etched down-tube logos and heat cured decals.

The Kinesis GF_Ti is said to provide the holy grail not just of titanium bikes, but road bikes the world over – giving speed, comfort and agility in a lightweight package. Aimed at the sportive rider, or even weekend tourer, its versatility and do-it-all nature is borne out by mudguard and rack mounts, as well as 28c tyres.

First impression: In the first five miles of our test loop, this bike does enough to convince us that it’s the most comfortable bike on test.  Beyond the way in which the wide-diameter, high-volume tyres damp out the imperfections, the frame is perfectly designed for a long ride on a bad road. Imagine what it’d be like on fresh, summer road surfaces.

On the road: Very rarely does a bike build gel so well as this one.  First, the level of comfort from the rear end is almost other-worldly, with any harshness taken out of the ride by the design of the seatstays and lowering the pressure of the 28c tyres.  The front end is almost equally flawless, with precise, assured handling and a quality set of bars.

Handling: The fairly long wheelbase and relaxed steering geometry of the GF_Ti mean nothing’s ever going to get out of hand.  Even on some of the more rapid descents of our loop, the front end remained composed under quick direction changes, bumps in the road, and when adjusting our line mid-corner.  Which isn’t to say that it’s not a fairly agile machine.

Build Quality: Weld quality was the best on test, while bowed seatstays act as built-in shock absorbers. The stunning tapered head tube looks like a metal hourglass

Detail:

The Kinesis GF Ti is a strong contender for the ‘only bike you need’ prize.  Super-versatile all-rounder with state of the art construction, the ride is subtly compliant rather than magic carpet but still gives respite from poor roads.

The Kinesis carbon fork, with its deep blades delivers a notable accuracy to the front end. The tapered steerer and oversized main tubes help, lending the GF Ti considerable poise and confidence.  There’s little sign of the stereotypical titanium twang!

The original GF Ti endurance bike impressed us, and having made the switch to disc brakes it’s now even better.   The fork features huge clearances, though the geometry is actually more suited to speed than cruising.

Comfort is excellent on poor surfaces, while the head-tube and fork remain resolute ….  for sportives, Audax events or light touring – or even as an occasional gravel grinder – this disc-braked Kinesis is a superb and very versatile machine.
