2017 Orbea Orca
The elegant sweeping shapes, stylish colour ways and deep finishes of the Orbea Orca are what first catch the eye. But it's the cutting edge technology, together with the drag reducing tube profiles and innovative fork design, of the all new Orcas that provide incredible performance and strength, while the top tube and seat stays are tuned to almost nothing – the primary purpose of their slender shapes: to reduce mass.
Reducing weight is relatively simple - the key to the Orca is balance, with the whole being greater than the sum of the parts – a sub 900g frame with a ride quality that is almost revolutionary.
Orbea uses non-conventional and exclusive carbon fibres to optimise the ratio of weight to stiffness - their OMR and OMP carbon fibres deliver performance and reliability that is class leading (see Technology tab), while their standard modulus OME fibres deliver outstanding performance with the smallest of additional weight.
Ride quality - smoothness - is an elusive blend of elements and careful planning that results in an Orca that is a sheer joy to ride. Studying the way the frame behaves under a rider’s weight is beneficial to tuning the way bumps or vibrations are transmitted through the frame. The efficiency of the bottom bracket area contributes the feel that the bike is responsive, that power transfer is instantaneous.
The natural flex patterns created by the carbon layup and structure in the top tube and seat stays deliver an efficient, smooth ride that feels like floating over rough roads. The sensation is subtle - but it is noticeable and can be tested. And at the end of a gruelling climb it could make the difference between the podium and the consolation prize.
The all-new 2017 Orca Aero and Aero Disc framesets add further performance advantages with subtle aerodynamic improvements, that deliver increased speed without any of the penalties associated with many other aero framesets. A fork design borrowed from Orbea's class-leading Ordu triathlon bikes channels air flow around the front wheel and down tube, while subtly shaped frame tubes reduce drag further without adding unnecessary vertical rigidity, weight or lateral flex that flatter section tubesets are known for. The result is a bike that handles and rides like its class leading lightweight predecessor, but with lower drag...resulting in more speed with no drawbacks.
The stiffest, lightest, or most aero bike is not the best bike - it's an elusive blend of elements. That's what Orbea have delivered in the new Orca.
The Orca's racing geometry gets the most of every pedal stroke, efficiently converting every watt into speed. The wheelbase is shorter, allowing for a more responsive bike that take curves with ease and has great traction when you start pedalling and when you accelerate as well, which saves time and power at the same time. Additionally, a low stack and longer reach allow for a more aerodynamic position on the bike, and a more efficient use of energy.
The Orca is available in four variants for 2017:
- Orca - constructed from OME (standard modulus) carbon fibre, with slightly simplified tube shapes, the standard Orca offers a level of finish and a ride quality that matches or exceeds many of its higher priced competitors. With a tweaked geometry, the standard Orca offers a slightly more relaxed riding position than its full blown race orientated stable-mates, but one that is still undeniably aimed at fast riding performance.
- Orca Pro - the frameset is built using Orbea's OMP carbon fibres, which provide a great balance of strength, low weight, and compliance. Geometry is almost identical to the new Orca Aero framesets in terms of rider position (stack and reach). A true high-performance range of lightweight bikes with sublime handling and responsiveness.
- Orca Aero - new for 2017, the Orca Aero frameset is constructed entirely from OMR carbon fibres for the very highest ratio of stiffness to weight, while the layup is optimised to reduce fatigue inducing vibration and enhance handling. Simply stunning performance in all departments!
- Orca Disc - the new Orca Disc adds very little in frame weight to the new rim-braked OMR Aero frameset, but adds an awful lot in terms of braking control!
