As the ultra season kicks into full swing, the buildup to the big races of the year is now well and truly on. With it comes the switch from the rough stuff to the road for me, at least for now.
I’ll be heading to Spain next week for a race through the mountains, and I’ll be bringing you along for the journey. Bike checks and full kit rundowns guaranteed, hopefully a cool story or two along the way, as well as many lessons learned in the aftermath I’m sure.
So, what is what is Kromvojoj?
Kromvojoj is a word that comes from Esperanto and describes possible and diverse paths. The route may be shared, but anyone who’s raced an ultra knows how unique the experience is for each rider.
Kromvojoj starts and finishes in Reus, Catalunya, and covers 1385km of beautiful climbs, valleys, and coastlines, along the way.
I’m sure they can describe it a lot better than I can: https://www.kromvojoj.cc/en/

WHEN: 11th May 2024
WHERE: Catalunya, Spain
DISTANCE: 1385 km / 24,500m+ ascent
Where can I follow the race?

What are my ambitions for the race?
This one’s pretty simple, as the main goal here is to enjoy it. I guess that’s always the case, but the fact that this isn’t a major target for me this year means that the pressure is well and truly off! I’m focused on having a really good ride, but the outcome of that from a results perspective isn’t too important. Of course it would be nice to win, but that can’t always be the priority!
My main target this year is the Trans Continental Race, arguably the biggest ultra in the world, and Kromvojoj is an important stepping stone in my journey to that start line.
Streamlining set-up, getting a big ride in the legs to help really kickstart the summer form, refining resupply stops, practising with a new sleeping setup and schedule etc; these are all things best tested in an ultra, but experimentation doesn’t always go hand in hand with success straight away. Hopefully the lessons learned over the next couple of weeks payoff come Trans Con, but for now let’s have some fun!
