2019 Cannondale Scalpel-Si

The new Cannondale Scalpel-Si is the ultimate race bike for the challenging terrain of modern “extreme” cross country, and with new trail inspired geometry it is also the perfect machine for trail or singletrack riding for anyone looking for a super FAST ride.  It’s the lightest, stiffest XC full suspension bike on the planet.

The 2019 Scalpel features a radically revised XC geometry to own the climbs, rule the descents and decimate the competition. Striking the perfect balance of speed, traction and handling is XC racing’s original challenge and the new Scalpel-Si is the ultimate solution.

CATEGORY: EXTREME CROSS COUNTRY – Ultra light, race-oriented machines for riders seeking the ultimate in efficiency and speed on challenging terrain.

The Scalpel-Si’s frame is made from Cannondale’s proprietary BallisTec carbon, a sophisticated layup of military-grade fibres and high-impact resins that offers unparalleled levels of stiffness, smoothness, lightness and ultimate robustness. It’s a chassis composed around Cannondale’s groundbreaking OutFront geometry, a skillful rebalancing of the factors that effect steering to strike the sweet spot that lies between agility and stability.

Asymmetric Integration (Ai) delivers shorter chainstays and greater traction. By moving the drivetrain 6mm to the right, the rear wheel can be brought closer to the seat tube, without compromise. A matching Ai rear wheel, re-dished by 6mm, but laced with even spoke length, tension and bracing angle, keeps the rim in line with the seat tube, and the cassette in line with the chainrings. Simple. Elegant. Cannondale.

The Scalpel-Si bears the closest scrutiny. Close inspection reveals interchangeable cable guide chips at the headtube, ultralight Zero-Pivot Seat Stays, and a beautifully engineered carbon linkage, stiffened further by proprietary LockR pivot thru-axles. Up front, the the latest generation of the single-sided Lefty fork provides unsurpassed levels of stiffness and precision.  Some technology, however, cannot be seen, such as the hidden Di2 battery holder, discretely concealed in the top tube.

INSANE TRACTION – WITHOUT COMPROMISE:  Proprietary Ai offset drivetrain delivers super short chainstays for climb-winning traction and agile handling, without sacrificing mud/tyre clearance or limiting you to single ring set-ups.

XC AGILITY MEETS ALL-MOUNTAIN STABILITY:  OutFront Steering Geometry  gives you the best of both worlds: slack and stable on hectic descents, yet quick and nimble everywhere else.

THE BEST XC FORK…PERIOD:  Unbelievably rigid and precise, Lefty out-corners, out-handles and flat-out rides circles around its flexy XC competition. Its custom extra-long fork offsets (rake) make Cannondale’s OutFront Steering Geometry possible.

EXPLOSIVE STIFFNESS:  Just say no to energy-wasting flex. Scalpel Si is the stiffest XC dually going, thanks to the evenly dished Ai rear wheel, super short chainstays, LockR locking axles BallisTec Carbon construction.

NEW SE MODEL:  Scalpel gets even more trail-capable with this aggressively spec’d version. Rear travel is increased to 115mm, with 120mm fork, 180mm rotors, beefier tyres, wider rims and a dropper post!

The Scalpel-Si is the embodiment of Cannondale’s long-held philosophy of System Integration. A matchless performer, with groundbreaking technologies positioned front and centre, it’s the definitive response to XC racing’s oldest challenges.

Technical Highlights

The first single-crown, single-sided XC suspension fork in the world saves weight in the most obvious way.  With just one crown and one leg, all material is concentrated where needed for strength and stiffness, making it one of the lightest suspension forks in the world — 250 grams lighter than previous Lefty. Less un-sprung mass than traditional forks for better suspension response. And a tapered steerer for lighter weight and total compatibility.

Suspension is movement. The smoother it can move, the better it can do its job. Insulating you from impacts. Floating through the chop. Tracking over the things that would throw you off. When it comes to smoothness, Ocho stands alone. Fewer friction-causing bushings and seals than any other fork. The supple new Chamber damper. And the new Delta Cage evolution of Lefty’s revolutionary needle bearing telescope assembly. It all adds up to the smoothest fork ever made. No sticking, no binding, no shuddering or hesitation, no matter how hard you push it.

Lefty Ocho has the best overall stiffness of any lightweight XC fork, which is great. But what separates it from the rest is not so much how stiff it is, but rather how it is stiff. Because stiffness, like so many things, is a double-edged sword: Too flexy and you’ve got a noodle that won’t go where it’s told. Too stiff, or stiff in the wrong places, and it wants to ricochet and bounce, instead of float and flow. Ocho’s unique single-crown design, and triangle-in-triangle telescope, give Cannondale unprecedented ability to tailor the stiffness of the fork.

Ballistec

BallisTec is Cannondale's proprietary method of high-strength, high-stiffness carbon construction. It allows them to tightly control frame stiffness and strength, so they can push the boundaries of light weight and ride-feel with total confidence (and lifetime warranties.)

BallisTec is the ideal blend of the most advanced materials in the world combined with the most advanced carbon engineering and design. The results speak for themselves. In mountain bikes, it lets us build exceptionally strong, light bikes like the Scalpel-Si, F-Si, and Habit. On the road, it enables Cannondale to push the boundaries of light weight while tightly controlling the frame's overall stiffness and ride feel on bikes like the all-new Synapse, SuperSix EVO and SuperX.

It starts with a base structure composed of ultra-strong fibres like those used for military ballistic armouring, and high-strength, high-impact resins similar to what is used in the construction of carbon baseball bats; light, stiff and designed to endure thousands of deformation cycles. Cannondale combine these fibres and this resin in a lay-up designed to maximise the an-isotropic (direction-specific) qualities of the fibres in a carbon structure that is extremely light, extremely stiff and capable of withstanding high loads without damage or loss of structural integrity. This enables the frames to pass all of Cannondale's extremely tough destructive and fatigue testing, and ensures that they are up to the rigors of real-world riding.

To tune the overall stiffness and ride-feel of the frame, Cannondale strategically add the stiffer, but more brittle higher modulus fibres to create an interconnected network of stiffening fibres throughout the frame. This allows them to precisely tune in different amounts of stiffness and deflection at different points throughout the frame, creating an unbelievably balanced and nuanced ride.

BALLISTEC HI-MOD™:  BallisTec at its best. Both versions share the same ultra strong base structure, but the Hi-MOD version uses a a sophisticated mix of high and ultra-high modulus fibres to create the stiffening network. Due to their extreme rigidity, Cannondale can gain tremendous stiffness with less material, which keeps the overall structure weight to a minimum.

BALLISTEC CARBON™: This version shares the same structure, lay-up and shapes as the Hi-MOD versions but the stiffness and ride feel are dialled in with multiple layers of intermediate-modulus fibres, rather than the more expensive high modulus fibres. This additional material adds a slight amount of weight but delivers similar stiffness and deflection to the Hi-MOD versions.

OutFront

OutFront Steering Geometry pairs a slack head angle with a long fork offset (rake) to increase stability and confidence while maintaining agility. OutFront gives you the best of both worlds: stable, confident handling at high speeds, and quick, nimble handling at slow speeds.

Conventional thinking says that bike handling is either quick and agile, which makes them nervous and twitchy at speed, or it is slack and stable, which makes them sluggish and floppy when things slow down. OutFront Steering Geometry proves conventional thinking wrong. OutFront starts with a progressively slack head angle, which improves high-speed stability and confidence, and pairs it with a longer-than-normal fork rake (offset). This long rake does two important things:

One, it increases Front-Centre distance more than the slack head angle could on its own, which puts the wheel further out in front of the rider, helping it ride up and over obstacles and reducing the likelihood of going over the bars in rough terrain or under panic braking.  Two, it actually REDUCES a crucial measurement called “trail”. Trail is the distance between where the head angle line, and a line drawn vertically down from the axle, meet the ground, and it is a key driver of the self-centring effect of bicycle steering. The bigger the “trail” measurements, the greater the self-centring effect and the slower the bicycle will steer.

By using a longer fork rake to reduce the trail, Cannondale can exploit the stability of a slack head angle, without the sluggish slow speed handling usually associated with it. It's the best of both worlds: slack and stable on fast, challenging terrain, yet quick and agile at slow speeds and on climbs.

SI

Si is Cannondale's philosophy of designing frames and key components together as a system to achieve higher levels of performance.

Cannondale pride themselves on making the most kickass, cutting edge frames in cycling. That’s great and all, but you don’t race a frame, you race a complete bike, so it just seems like common sense to design it like one. The essence of the System Integration philosophy is that if key components of the bike are optimised to work specifically with each other and with the frame, the result is a better performing bike. Rather than limiting themselves by designing frames to accept off-the-shelf standards, Cannondale develop component technologies and frames as a complete package, each designed specifically for the other.

Technologies like Lefty, HollowGram, OutFront Steering Geometry and Ai Drivetrain offer real, tangible benefits to the rider, and all are a direct result of the System Integration philosophy. Si bikes are lighter, stiffer, better handling and simply faster than anything else out there!

Ai

Ai is a proprietary system in which Cannondale moves the drivetrain outboard by 6mm to allow for ultra-short chainstays and a stiffer rear wheel, with none of the usual compromises. Short chainstays improve traction and agility. Ai allows Cannondale to engineer ultra short chainstays, without sacrificing tyre clearance, chainstay stiffness or the ability to run dual chainrings. As a bonus, it also creates a stiffer, stronger rear wheel.

Short chainstays are hot technology right now. These days, everyone's talking about how short their chainstays are. Soon, companies will be claiming they have chainstays shorter than the effective radius of their wheels. And for good reason. Short stays are great for traction - they get the rear wheel in under the rider's weight better on steep climbs - and they bring some much-needed agility and nimbleness to bikes with big diameter wheels.

But space in that rear triangle is already at a premium, so if you want to move the rear wheel even further in, something's got to give. If you look at most of the bikes out there with short chainstays, you'll notice that they've made some significant sacrifices to get there. They've gotten rid of the front derailleur and 2nd chainring. They've given up clearance for bigger tyres or mud. They've made their driveside chainstay super skinny and flexy. Or most likely, some unholy combination of all three.

Cannondale had a better idea. Their Ai system simply shifts the chainrings, front derailleur and chainstay over by 6mm, which creates tons of room for the wheel to come forward, shortening the stays without sacrificing anything. But of course, if you move the chainrings over, the rear cogs need to move over the same amount to maintain ideal chainline. Rather than creating some special wider, heavier rear hub, the Ai system simply takes a standard rear wheel and re-dishes it over by 6mm. The result? Even spoke angles and tension on both sides, resulting in a massively stiffer, stronger rear wheel, with no additional weight.

LOCKR

LockR's unique expanding thru-axles create a super solid connection between swingarm and main frame, reducing flex and play between swingarm and frame to improve responsiveness.

A frame is only as stiff as its weakest parts. On dual suspension bikes, those weakest parts are often the crucial bearings and links that join the swingarm to the front triangle. The vague, imprecise sensation felt on so many bikes is caused by the subtle movement and flex that occurs in the connecting hardware as the loads on the bike shift from side-to-side.

To combat this, Cannondale created LockR. The LockR pivots are oversized thru-axles with expanding collets at each end. When tightened, these collets expand and lock inside both sides of the swingarm, making the axle a structural part of the swingarm and helping it resist twisting loads far better than conventional pivot axles. As a bonus, LockR axles require no special tools to adjust.

OPI

Cannondale’s proprietaryOPI 3D forging process allows them to take structures that would ordinarily consist of multiple pieces that would be bolted, bonded, welded or otherwise joined together and turn them into single-piece forged parts. A single block of aluminium is run through a series of different forging steps that can shape the material into complex forms, which are then machined into the final shape. By forging the pieces from a single block of aluminium, they end up with exceptionally good grain alignment, which makes the parts stronger, and eliminates excess, overlapping or redundant material, which makes them lighter.

This technology makes parts like the Lefty OPI outer tube/clamp structure, the Lefty OPI inner leg/axle, the HollowGram Si cranks and the SpideRing chainrings possible.
