2018 Cannondale Trigger

Big ups & big downs. All mountain & all day. With a killer new dual-mode, dual-travel shock, and its Ai-driven, all-mountain attack geometry and 145mm rear / 150mm front travel, the all-new Trigger lives for big days in the big mountains, where sustained efforts lead to sublime rewards. Built for those ready go all out & all in.

The 2018 Trigger features aggressive all-mountain geometry for centred weight distribution. Positioning the rider for power on the ups and control on the downs.

CATEGORY: ALL MOUNTAIN – Super versatile, hard-charging bikes for big days in big mountains.  Built for full throttle, no-limits descending, with all-day rideability and the ability to climb – ideal for mountain adventures and anything a trail can throw at you.

The Trigger’s frame is made from Cannondale’s proprietary BallisTec carbon, a sophisticated layup of military-grade fibres and high-impact resins that offers unparalleled levels of stiffness, smoothness, lightness and ultimate robustness.

Asymmetric Integration (Ai) delivers some of the shortest stays on the trail (420mm) for climb-crushing traction and unreal agility, while preserving max tyre clearance and frame stiffness. Plus a stiffer, stronger rear wheel thanks to the Ai even-dish build.

The new Trigger is future proofed and hyper-adaptable, with interchangeable in-headtube cable guides hold the housing securely and support every possible cable configuration. No matter your preference, the Trigger provides the cleanest and most adaptable option for literally every need – 1x, 2x, Di2, rear shock remote, and of course dropper.

As well as key technologies the Trigger comes with a stack of features that add to its practicality and performance, like the replaceable carbon downtube shield that protects your ride from rock strikes and bad days, space for a 24oz bottle to keep water off your back for those days when need a bit extra in the tank, and Boost Spacing on all forks as well as Boost Ai rear wheels.

GEMINI SHOCK:  Co-developed with Fox, the Gemini system adds a whole new level of all-mountain capability to the killer performance of the Float X and DPS shocks. Hustle mode shortens the travel and keeps you higher in the stroke for improved efficiency and snappy response on climbs and rolling terrain. Flow mode drops your ride height and unleashes full Fox travel when its time to cook.

ALL-MOUNTAIN ATTACK GEOMETRY:  Short stays and a steep seat angle, paired with a long front centre and slack head angle lets you climb like a goat,
flick through direction changes like a hummingbird & destroy the downs like a grizzly. Ride like an animal.

  • 66° head tube angle
  • Designed for short stems and wide bars for max control
  • Long front-centre
  • Shortest chainstays out there (420mm) thanks to Ai offset drivetrain
  • Properly steep seat angle for efficient pedalling.

LEVERAGED SINGLE PIVOT DESIGN:  Placing a link between the swingarm and the shock allows Cannondale engineers to customise the system’s leverage ratios for optimal suspension response throughout the stroke and keep the suspension active under braking, while retaining the stiffness, durability and reliability of a single pivot design.

NEUTRAL BRAKING:  Dialled frame kinematics keep the suspension active and the rider in a level, neutral position under braking for incredible levels of control.

The all-new Trigger. Built for those who live to get out & go deep — for the chargers & the seekers who love long climbs, endless descents, and every last drop in between. With dialled all-mountain geometry, agile traction, and the Hustle & Flow magic of the Gemini shock, the new Trigger is ready to go all out & all in. You in?

Technical Highlights

Ballistec

BallisTec is Cannondale's proprietary method of high-strength, high-stiffness carbon construction. It allows them to tightly control frame stiffness and strength, so they can push the boundaries of light weight and ride-feel with total confidence (and lifetime warranties.)

BallisTec is the ideal blend of the most advanced materials in the world combined with the most advanced carbon engineering and design. The results speak for themselves. In mountain bikes, it lets us build exceptionally strong, light bikes like the Scalpel-Si, F-Si, and Habit. On the road, it enables Cannondale to push the boundaries of light weight while tightly controlling the frame's overall stiffness and ride feel on bikes like the all-new Synapse, SuperSix EVO and SuperX.

It starts with a base structure composed of ultra-strong fibres like those used for military ballistic armouring, and high-strength, high-impact resins similar to what is used in the construction of carbon baseball bats; light, stiff and designed to endure thousands of deformation cycles. Cannondale combine these fibres and this resin in a lay-up designed to maximise the an-isotropic (direction-specific) qualities of the fibres in a carbon structure that is extremely light, extremely stiff and capable of withstanding high loads without damage or loss of structural integrity. This enables the frames to pass all of Cannondale's extremely tough destructive and fatigue testing, and ensures that they are up to the rigors of real-world riding.

To tune the overall stiffness and ride-feel of the frame, Cannondale strategically add the stiffer, but more brittle higher modulus fibres to create an interconnected network of stiffening fibres throughout the frame. This allows them to precisely tune in different amounts of stiffness and deflection at different points throughout the frame, creating an unbelievably balanced and nuanced ride.

BALLISTEC HI-MOD™:  BallisTec at its best. Both versions share the same ultra strong base structure, but the Hi-MOD version uses a a sophisticated mix of high and ultra-high modulus fibres to create the stiffening network. Due to their extreme rigidity, Cannondale can gain tremendous stiffness with less material, which keeps the overall structure weight to a minimum.

BALLISTEC CARBON™: This version shares the same structure, lay-up and shapes as the Hi-MOD versions but the stiffness and ride feel are dialled in with multiple layers of intermediate-modulus fibres, rather than the more expensive high modulus fibres. This additional material adds a slight amount of weight but delivers similar stiffness and deflection to the Hi-MOD versions.

Co-developed with Fox Shox, the Gemini system adds dual ride modes to the Fox Float X and DPS shocks. Hustle mode lets you shorten the travel and ramp up the spring rate on-the-fly for a snappier, more responsive feel – perfect for fast rhythm sections, pumping through turns, sprints and traction-challenged climbs. Flow brings you back to full, unadulterated max Fox travel for getting after it.

Gemini Shock

  • 145mm travel in full mode (Flow).
  • 115mm travel in short mode (Hustle).
  • An added feature on normal Fox shocks – not some oddball freak-shock.
  • Normal shock set-up and function – all Fox performance features and settings are unchanged.
  • Works by limiting air-spring volume, rather than increasing compression damping, so the shock stays fully active in short travel mode for better suspension action and traction.
  • All shock adjustment features work in both Hustle and Flow modes.
Ai

Ai is a proprietary system in which Cannondale moves the drivetrain outboard by 6mm to allow for ultra-short chainstays and a stiffer rear wheel, with none of the usual compromises. Short chainstays improve traction and agility. Ai allows Cannondale to engineer ultra short chainstays, without sacrificing tyre clearance, chainstay stiffness or the ability to run dual chainrings. As a bonus, it also creates a stiffer, stronger rear wheel.

Short chainstays are hot technology right now. These days, everyone's talking about how short their chainstays are. Soon, companies will be claiming they have chainstays shorter than the effective radius of their wheels. And for good reason. Short stays are great for traction - they get the rear wheel in under the rider's weight better on steep climbs - and they bring some much-needed agility and nimbleness to bikes with big diameter wheels.

But space in that rear triangle is already at a premium, so if you want to move the rear wheel even further in, something's got to give. If you look at most of the bikes out there with short chainstays, you'll notice that they've made some significant sacrifices to get there. They've gotten rid of the front derailleur and 2nd chainring. They've given up clearance for bigger tyres or mud. They've made their driveside chainstay super skinny and flexy. Or most likely, some unholy combination of all three.

Cannondale had a better idea. Their Ai system simply shifts the chainrings, front derailleur and chainstay over by 6mm, which creates tons of room for the wheel to come forward, shortening the stays without sacrificing anything. But of course, if you move the chainrings over, the rear cogs need to move over the same amount to maintain ideal chainline. Rather than creating some special wider, heavier rear hub, the Ai system simply takes a standard rear wheel and re-dishes it over by 6mm. The result? Even spoke angles and tension on both sides, resulting in a massively stiffer, stronger rear wheel, with no additional weight.

Cannondale Trigger Ai

LOCKR

LockR's unique expanding thru-axles create a super solid connection between swingarm and main frame, reducing flex and play between swingarm and frame to improve responsiveness.

A frame is only as stiff as its weakest parts. On dual suspension bikes, those weakest parts are often the crucial bearings and links that join the swingarm to the front triangle. The vague, imprecise sensation felt on so many bikes is caused by the subtle movement and flex that occurs in the connecting hardware as the loads on the bike shift from side-to-side.

To combat this, Cannondale created LockR. The LockR pivots are oversized thru-axles with expanding collets at each end. When tightened, these collets expand and lock inside both sides of the swingarm, making the axle a structural part of the swingarm and helping it resist twisting loads far better than conventional pivot axles. As a bonus, LockR axles require no special tools to adjust.
