Genesis Tour de Fer

The Genesis Tour de Fer is based on the record breaking Croix de Fer, but comes with a true world touring geometry and touring specific components.  Equally at home on paved or rougher rougher surfaces, the Tour de Fer is equipped for epic adventure touring, whatever your destination.

Build-wise, Genesis have built up the super tough steel Tour de Fer framesets with durable, no-nonsense components that they knew from personal experience are tour/expedition worthy and should last the sorts of high-mileages for which the bike was intended.

The spec lists on the two Reynolds 725 tubed models read like a cyclo tourist’s wishlist; even going so far as to include a Shimano dynamo hub with B&M front and rear lights, plus a front and rear racks.  All models come fitted with Tubus Cargo rear rack, three bottle cages and mudguards.

While the Tour de Fer 10 above represents the Genesis vision of affordable escapism; a bike designed for the sole purpose of carrying rider and luggage long distances efficiently and in comfort, without leaving a sizeable dent in your pocket.  Genesis have put it together as affordably as possible without cutting corners that would’ve been detrimental to the ride or long-term ownership. This meant choosing kit that was still rugged and reliable kit, but at a slightly less refined level and using a more economical frame tube-set.

Most of what makes the Tour de Fer so good for touring is also 100% applicable to commuting. Everyday practicalities like large volume, highly puncture resistant Schwalbe Marathon tyres, tough wheelsets, powerful, controlled disc brakes, rack and full length mudguards.

The Genesis Tour de Fer is expedition-ready straight from the box – just add rider, luggage and a strong sense of adventure.

As well as different components, the individual models within the Tour de Fer range are constructed from one of two different frame materials:

REYNOLDS 725:

The classic premium steel tubing that made the name of Croix de Fer synonymous with reliability and performance –  a seamless Chromoly but heat-treated to boost tensile strength, think of it as Chromoly on steroids.  It’s heated to around 1600F whereby a structural change in the steels’ crystal lattice occurs (a stronger, more uniform orientation), it’s then quenched (cooled rapidly) to lock-in the structural change. As it’s stronger Genesis can get away with using less of it, so thinner butts are the order of the day helping to achieve a lighter overall frame weight and livelier ride without compromising strength.

MJÖLNIR:

AKA ‘Thor’s Hammer’ and pronounced ‘Myol-n(ee)r‘.  Genesis’s double-butted, cold-drawn, seamless, Taiwanese Chromoly tubeset also goes by the aliases of 4130, Cr-Mo and Chromo.  Ultra-reliable tubing that performs well in a variety of applications, and which can be built into framesets at a lower cost than with the lighter and stiffer Reynolds 725.  The starting point for many a tough, affordable steel frame – ideal for applications where low weight or maximum responsiveness are not quite as important.

The Reynolds 725 framesets are also available for full custom build using components of your choice.

At first glance it would be easy to assume that this is just a Croix de Fer with beefed up parts, but the geometry of the Tour de Fer is subtly different compared to its more spritely cousin.  The primary differences are a longer wheelbase, which improves general stability, a lower trail fork to improve the handling when loaded at the front and a slightly higher stack height, which makes for a more comfortable, upright position…  Whether you have an epic commute to tackle or are planning on circumnavigating the world, the Tour de Fer 20 is a very dependable looking bike which is well worth your attention”  BikeRadar
