Salsa Warbird

The ultimate long distance gravel racer

Regarded by most in the industry as the original gravel racing bike, the latest version of the Warbird builds on everything Salsa have learned to offer you more of what the Warbird has always been about. Speed, long-distance comfort,multi-terrain capability and control, together with the capacity to take whatever you need with you on your adventures.  The Warbird is the world’s leading high-performance gravel bike for anyone looking to ride quickly over any terrain, whatever the distance – whether you are racing or simply exploring your local area.

The moment you put the pedal down, the Salsa Warbird is so lively and quick—even loaded down with three big bottles and two bags—yet so comfy and surefooted—even over rumbling, rain-rutted B-roads—you know immediately that it was built to crush gravel.”  BICYCLING MAGAZINE

The first-generation Warbird was the result of Salsa’s early thinking about just what gravel racing entailed. Gravel racing and cyclocross are wildly different beasts, and one bike cannot be built to do both of those tasks best. The initial aluminum-only Warbird model proved the benefits of Salsa’s first take on gravel-specific geometry (long and low for increased stability on rough roads and fast descents), increased mud clearance, and disc brakes. It also pointed out the opportunity for continued improvement, especially related to increased rider comfort.

There are a certain group of people that are happiest when they are pushing the boundaries of achievement. I would argue that maybe there are a few more of these people in the cycling world than the population in general. I would also argue that there is a bit of this in all of us – who hasn’t felt the sense of satisfaction at their longest ride or finally nailing a wheelie or cleaning a technical section of trail? For me, it’s really interesting to see how symbiotic the growth of gravel has been: the Warbird is successful because it was a bike that riders wanted but so many riders didn’t realise, until such a bike existed.Pannier.CC

Over the next decade Salsa’s knowledge, experience and capabilities were channeled into the development of their Class 5 (referring to the class of ‘road’ these bikes are designed to tackle) Vibration Reduction System (VRS) carbon fibre that is now used in Warbird and Cutthroat models.  Other improvements were made in moving to the carbon fibre Warbird, including further refining of the gravel specific geometry and increasing mud clearance and tyre fit, but the real gem was Class 5 VRS.

“The testing I did wound up showing dramatic improvements from the Class 5 VRS rear end,” said Mailen, Salsa head designer. “The Warbird Carbon frame was showing 9% more compliance than Ti. That is pretty incredible when you consider the costs of a good Titanium frame.”

Warbird v4 Highlights

With all of their history in defining the gravel bike category it should come as surprise that the Warbird V4’s key features read like a gravel rider’s wish list:

  • HIGH MODULUS CARBON FIBER FRAME AND FORK: 100 grams frame weight savings while adding new features
  • NEW “GRAVEL RACE GEOMETRY”: a slacker “gravel race” geometry (with more relaxed head tube angle and 430mm chainstays) for stability over sketchy terrain, and a longer top tube on most sizes provides increased stability at high speeds
  • DUAL WHEEL SIZE COMPATIBLE: 700c x 32-45mm or 650b x 47-51mm
  • MORE MOUNTS: 2-3 bottle mounts inside the main triangle (56cm and above receive 3 mounts inside the main triangle), one accessory/bottle mount under the downtube, and a pair of top-tube bag bosses; for secure connection and elimination of strap wear
  • SUSPENSION FORK COMPATIBLE: with currently available gravel forks, including Fox AX and Lauf
  • DRIVETRAIN COMPATIBILITY: refined for 1x, 2x, and all current electronic offerings (1x: 44t max; 2x: 52/36t max, 46/30t minimum)
  • FLAT MOUNT BRAKE COMPATIBILITY: hydraulic and mechanical, 140mm min. rotor size (160mm recommended)
  • INTERNAL DROPPER ROUTING: for 27.2mm diameter post, when running a 1x drivetrain
  • FENDER MOUNTS: Front and rear, for riding in wet weather
  • REAR RACK COMPATIBLE: using Salsa Rack-Lock Seat Collar, compatible with standard rear racks
  • IMPROVED POWER TRANSFER: updated chainstay, bottom bracket, and downtube design transfers rider power more efficiently
  • 2ND GENERATION CLASS 5 VIBRATION REDUCTION SYSTEM: the same incredible rear end compliance, tuned per size
  • IMPROVED STANDOVER HEIGHT: lower toptube for improved rider fit
  • FULLY INTERNAL CABLE ROUTING: internal tubes guide housing through the frame

As well as the range of Salsa factory built full bikes, we are also able to offer a full custom specification with the Warbird; starting with a bare frameset we can build you a full bike using components of your choice.
