Surly Straggler
Hugely Versatile Gravel Bike
The new Surly Straggler is back—reborn with modern updates but still true to its roots. Think of it as the wilder sibling to the Midnight Special: where the Midnight Special thrives on pavement with all-road versatility, the Straggler starts from the dirt up. It’s a big-tyred gravel rig that’s equally at home tackling back lanes, commuting across town, or loading up for weekend tours.

More than a decade since its last update, Surly has redesigned the Straggler to preserve its signature ride feel while embracing new standards. You’ll find thru-axle dropouts, flat-mount brakes, a 44mm headtube, and internal dropper routing—all wrapped around a subtly revised geometry that balances comfort, control, and versatility.

With clearance for 700c x 50mm tires (or 650b, depending on frame size), the Straggler delivers confident handling across broken terrain. Mounts for racks, mudguards, and bottle cages add day-to-day practicality, while the improved gravel geometry features a lower bottom bracket and sloping top tube for greater stability and standover.
“The beauty of a bike like this is the psychological nudge to ride farther from home. You head out for the usual loop and end up chasing extra miles—that’s what the Straggler does for me. The generous stack lends comfort on long rides, and it feels balanced on smoother climbs and descents. It even has a bit of snap for short, punchy efforts.” Bikepacking.com
Whether it’s a dirt-road escape, a loaded bikepacking trip, or just the daily ride to town, the Straggler is built to take the rowdy detour every time.

The Surly Straggler comes to us as a frameset, for building up into a complete bike in our workshop using components of your choice. And with a huge variety of build options the Straggler can be tuned to ride exactly the kind of riding you have in mind.
“At the end of the day, the Straggler has always been the bike that a whole spectrum of cyclists use for all kinds of adventures and errands–it’s versatile, it’s dependable, and it’s really fun. I’ve ridden some top-flight gravel bikes that were so light and jittery they made me feel like I was just doing some very expensive under-biking on washboard roads. Those models made me think I didn’t like riding gravel bikes. But the ride quality, versatility, and fit of this scrappy little wild card convinced me I do. I really, really do.” Cycling Weekly
