TYRE RECOMMENDATIONS

One of the most important components when it comes to your riding experience is the only part of the bike in contact with the road or trail – your tyres.  Tyre choice is critical to every part of a ride – handling, grip, speed and puncture avoidance.  A lot of standard factory built bikes come with tyres that may not be suitable for your specific riding needs or local terrain.  So around half of the bikes we sell involve a tyre swap or upgrade, and that’s before we get to custom builds where everyone has a blank sheet of paper when it comes to tyre choice.

We love building and riding bikes, and the topic of tyres is a hot one in store as we’re always tuning our own rides, with the workshop experiencing the ups and downs of fitting particular tyres to particular rims, and we’re constantly receiving welcome feedback from customers of the performance of their tyres.

So we have rounded up some of our favourites below, which unsurprisingly are the models that we most frequently recommend and try to hold in stock (when global supply issues allow).  Most are what we would consider upgrades over the factory fitted tyres used in many factory built bikes.

We’ve added a price band under each tyre, to give an indication of the RRP of each tyre, as follows:  £ = up to £30 per tyre, ££ = £30-£50, £££££ = £50-£70, ££££ = £70+.

With the recommendations below we’ve included a summary of a few key features.  So what do they mean?

  • Casing/Puncture Protection – technically, these are two different things.  The casing is the woven material (usually nylon, but occasionally cotton) that the rubber and other materials are applied or bonded to.  It’s like the foundation or carcass of the tyre.  Puncture proofing refers to other layers that are added between the casing and the rubber to resist thorns, rocks, glass etc.  But in reality a lot of tyre manufacturers combine the two things, to create a composite carcass that the rubber layers are applied to.
  • Compound – this is the rubber (or more accurately rubber ‘blend’ as it includes additional materials to tune the properties of the natural rubber content) that is bonded to the carcass of the tyre, and is the layer that sits in contact with the road, providing grip, abrasion resistance and sealing in the air etc.  Simplistically, softer rubber compounds give more grip, while harder compounds are lighter, longer lasting and faster rolling. Tyres can either use a single rubber compound or use different compounds in different areas of the tyre, such as faster hard wearing compound in the centre, with a softer grippier compound on the outer edges for cornering grip (a ‘dual compound’), or multiple layers with harder compounds underneath to resist ‘squirming’ in corners, and softer ones layered on top.
  • Tubeless Compatibility – pretty much standard in all but the most basic entry level tyres for off road use, tubeless tyres are becoming ever more popular in road tyres now that an international standard has been adopted by most manufacturers and tubeless compatible rims are more widely available.  Tubed tyres rely on a standard inner tube to hold air, while tubeless tyres hold air in the space between the tyre casing and the wheel rim with no need for an inner tube.  Tubeless tyres need to be built to much more precise size standards and use soft compounds in the tyre bead adjacent to the rim to ensure an air tight seal.  They also need a tubeless valve to be inserted in the rim in place of the inner tube’s valve, and for the rim to be sealed using tubeless rim tape.  Finally, while it is possible to run tubeless tyres without it, especially when riding with low pressures off road) it is much better to run the tyres with a tubeless sealant inside in order to fill and seal any tiny gaps, and also to plus any punctures before the tyre goes flat.  As staff, we run tubeless tyres in all tyre types now due to the lower rolling resistance, superior road feel, greater grip and truly massive reduction in flat tyres.  Sure, they take slightly longer to fit, but the payback is huge.
  • TPI – manufacturers will often cite a thread count (threads per inch) in their casing descriptions.  The higher the thread count, the finer the threads used.  In theory, finer threads will offer a more supple tyre with better contact surface feel and cornering ability (especially when on road) as they deform around road imperfections more tightly.  While still a useful indicator in practice, many tyres have multiple additional layers for puncture proofing, meaning that much of the extra suppleness is lost.

ROAD TYRES

Manufacturers frequently fit basic entry level tyres to road bikes – even those that are fitted with high level components in other areas. In particular, they often fit tubed tyres to tubeless compatible rims. Tubeless road tyres have become much more popular and reliable since standardisation reached the road market, bringing lower rolling resistance and superior puncture protection to your ride, but we still offer a strong range of tubed options where rims are not tubeless compatible or where the rider just prefers the simplicity of a tubed set up.

GRAVEL TYRES

All of our gravel tyre recommendations are tubeless – there is no doubt at all that running with a tubeless set up over mixed surfaces is game changing when it comes to reducing flats. It doesn’t eliminate them totally, but it makes them a true rarity.  Tubeless tyres can also be run as lower pressures, leading to improved grip, greater comfort and lower rolling resistance over rough surfaces.

Maxxis Ravager

Introduction

Another staff favourite, especially for when the conditions get wet, muddy and wintery.  The Ravager incorporates many of the features that make Maxxis such a strong brand in the MTB world, including tough casings and sidewalls, fast rolling tread compounds and reliable tubeless set up.  It’ no slouch on hard pack surfaces, but it’s when conditions get tough and muddy when the Ravager truly shines.

  • Price Band: £££

Key Benefits:

  • Easy to set up tubeless
  • Tough
  • Possibly the best mud tyre available in 700c
  • Surprisingly quick on road, super grippy off-road

  • Casing: 120TPI, TechWALL Gravel anti-puncture
  • Compound: Speed Grip

In Review:

“As you take the Cinturato out of the packaging you can feel that it’s a tough, well made and good quality product. Fitting and tubeless set up were a breeze too. Obviously our expectations were high, based on Pirelli’s reputation, and also for a European made product (France in this case) and the Cinturatos didn’t disappoint. For a product is touted as an all-rounder Pirelli have achieved this with precious little compromise. ” ADVNTR.CC

Vittoria Terreno Dry

Introduction

While it wins no prizes for accurate naming (it’s way more than a tyre for the ‘Dry’) the Vittoria Terreno Dry has won a hatful of industry awards for very good reason.  The Terreno Dry bridges the gap between file treads and traditional all-conditions gravel treads, making it suitable for a huge range of surfaces apart from mud and very loose rocky terrain.  The key to this is the unique angled “fish scale” design, that allows the centre tread to roll extremely fast, yet offer traction when loaded in cornering and braking. Add the transitional height mid and side tread, and the Terreno Dry transitions as smoothly and quickly as it rolls.

  • Price Band: ££

Key Benefits:

  • Semi slick tyre that is for far more than just ‘dry’ conditions
  • Decent grip
  • Strong cornering performance
  • Light and very fast
  • Comes up a little larger than its size label (e.g. 38mm = 40mm)

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 650x47c, 700x31c, 700x33c, 700x35c, 700x38c
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes
  • Claimed manufacturer weight: 700x38c: 490g
  • Casing: 120 TPI, TNT Sidewall Protection
  • Compound: Graphene

In Review:

“Vittoria is underselling this by naming it the Terreno Dry. While it is excellent on dry surfaces, as you might hope, it’s surprisingly capable for more general, year-round conditions too. It’s one of the best fast tyres you can buy, and cheaper than other premium tyres to boot.” OffroadCC

Vittoria Terreno Mix

Introduction

The Terreno Mix all conditions tread offers very high levels of performance, no matter the terrain. At the heart of the design is a fast rolling centre ridge, which is designed to minimise rolling resistance, especially on hard pack or paved surfaces, while still providing confident braking traction. Cornering and off camber work is confidently handled by alternating open shoulder lugs. The Terreno Mix is a strong contender if you are looking for that “one” tire to do it all – a little slower on hard pack surfaces than the Pirelli Cinturato Mix, but a little more capable in muddy conditions.

  • Price Band: ££

Key Benefits:

  • Pretty fast rolling on tarmac and hardpack
  • Grippy and pliant off-road
  • Easily seated tubeless
  • Good levels of protection, especially in the sidewalls

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 700x31c, 700x33c, 700x38c
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes
  • Claimed manufacturer weight: 700x38c: 500g
  • Casing: 120 TPI, TNT Sidewall Protection
  • Compound: Graphene

In Review:

“The Vittoria Terreno Mix tyre is a good option for mixed surfaces, rolling well on road and feeling very subtle and grippy off-road too. It’s easy to set up tubeless and feels robust, if a little heavy for cyclo-cross racing use.” Cycling Weekly

WTB Nano

Introduction

The WTB Nano is arguably one of the most versatile gravel tyres you can buy, despite being available in just one size.  It is certainly one of the best selling gravel tyres . The nearly uninterrupted centreline provides swift efficiency on hardpack terrain while staggered outer knobs allow you to stay on the gas while hammering up climbs or hanging on through loose gravel corners. The high-volume 40mm casing smooths out jarring gravel while also reducing drag and rolling resistance. It is undeniably a tyre that thrives in faster conditions, but it won’t let you down over softer ground either.

  • Price Band: ££

Key Benefits:

  • The classic all rounder
  • Fast rolling
  • Pretty tough
  • High performing in all but the muddiest or rockiest of conditions

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 700x40c
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes
  • Claimed manufacturer weight: 700x40c: 530g
  • Casing: Lightweight TCS
  • Compound: Dual DNA

In Review:

“Three years on, I’m finding it hard to find a single option that beats the WTB Nano 700c x 40 as an all-rounder gravel tyre. Here’s my humble ode to the Nano, and why I’d recommend them to almost anyone.” ADVNTR.CC

MTB TYRES

All of the following tyres are tubeless, tough and very easy/reliable to set up tubeless. All are amongst best in class for speed and grip, and we’ve seen outstanding longevity, reliability and performance from both customers and staff.

Maxxis Rekon Race

Introduction

The Maxxis Rekon Race is labelled as a semi-slick XC race tire, but it performs brilliantly well outside the race world – sure, it’s light and very fast, but its low profile tread is very capable in a wide range of dry to moderate trail conditions.  Often used as a fast rear tyre, paired with a more aggressive front tyre for more challenging terrain.  The Rekon Race is also tough, in its EXO side wall version, which is the one we stock.

  • Price Band: £££

Key Benefits:

  • Super fast
  • Reliable tyre for dry or moderate trail conditions
  • Ideal as a fast rear tyre, paired with an Ikon front tyre for more challenging XC conditions, or a Rekon for general trail riding
  • Rolls smoothly

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 27.5×2/2.25/2.35″, 29×2.25/2.35/2.4″
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes
  • Claimed manufacturer weight: 29×2.35″: 705g
  • Casing: 120 TPI, EXO puncture Protection
  • Compound: Dual Compound Technology

In Review:

“If I ever line up for another XC race on hardpack trails, the Maxxis Rekon Race tires will be mounted up front and rear. They not only roll fast, but the knobs grow slightly taller toward the shoulders, providing an ideal balance of grip and low rolling-resistance at every angle. There’s not enough rubber to consider any squirm issues in the turns, and the cornering grip is far better than I expected given their low profile.” Singletracks

Maxxis Ikon

Introduction

The Maxxis Ikon is well named – an iconic tyre in the Maxxis range, it has been continually updated with new casings and compounds, and now stands as the most versatile tyre in their range.  Designed as a fast Cross Country tyre, the Ikon offers a more aggressive tread than the Rekon Race, and also handles slippery conditions better.  Certainly not a specialist ‘mud’ tyre, the Ikon is still reliable when conditions tun soft.  Fast and capable, the Ikon is the ultimate fast all round race tyre for XC and light trails.  With EXO sidewalls the Ikon is tough enough for everyday use and works well as a ‘fit and forget’ pair for fast singletrack riding, as a front with a Rekon Race at the back for aggressive XC racing, or as a rear with a Rekon up front for fast trail riding.

  • Price Band: £££

Key Benefits:

  • Where XC tyres crossover with trail tyres
  • Fast rolling, despite a deeper tread
  • Capable in heavier or muddy conditions
  • Ultra reliable and long lasting
  • Stable in corners

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 26×2.2/2.35″; 27.5×2.2/2.35″; 29×2.2/2.35/2.6″
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes

Maxxis Rekon/Rekon+

Introduction

The Maxxis Rekon is a ‘light duty’ trail tyre designed to go fast in technical terrain, and the Rekon+ is a higher volume trail tyre for intermediate and technical terrain.  We’ve run these ourselves in all kinds of conditions, and over all tyres of terrain, from local trails to epic challenges like the Highland Trail 550, and they have never failed to impress.  While not a ‘race tyre’ as such, they are still pretty rapid and agile, while also being tough and aggressive enough for hardcore natural trails.  They can also be paired with a faster tyre at the rear, such as the Ikon or Rekon Race, if you’re looking for a quick but still capable set up.

  • Price Band: £££

Key Benefits:

  • Classic all round rail tyres
  • Grippier than the Rekon Race, but still quick
  • The second most popular Tour Divide tyre (after the Vittoria Mezcal)
  • Good sidewall protection

Technical Specification:

  • Available sizes: 27.5×2.4/2.6/2.8″; 29×2.25/2.4/2.6/2.8″
  • Tubeless Ready? Yes
  • Claimed manufacturer weight: 29×2.4″: 891g
  • Casing: 120 TPI, EXO Puncture Protection
  • Compound: MaxxTerra Compound Technology

In Review:

“Maxxis’ Rekon is a fast-rolling tyre that delivers bags of comfort and grip, while doing a stellar job of isolating you from trail chatter. The re-modelled EXO+ casing is reliably durable and puncture-resistant, too, making the Rekon a hugely attractive option” BikeRadar

Countless effective edges work together to grip on a variety of terrain, while directional siping on each knob makes traction in the roots and rocks. The best tires are built with the best casing and compound, and the Mezcal TNT is no exception. Using the proprietary Graphene enhanced 4C (4 layer) compound, the Mezcal attains the holy grail of XC tires; grip, durability, and low weight.
